Old Lyme passes first tourney test

Old Lyme - Seamus Douglas had 12 points and 14 rebounds as 15th-seeded Old Lyme High School used a huge fourth quarter comeback to beat No. 18 Tourtellotte, 48-42, in a CIAC Class S first round boys' basketball game Monday.

The Wildcats (13-9) trailed 39-26 after three quarters, but outscored the Tigers in the fourth, 22-3.

Colin Devlin had 10 points for Old Lyme, which will play at No. 2 Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Wednesday (7 p.m.).

Ed Kopacz had seven 3-pointers and 26 points for Tourtellotte (11-11).

In other first-round games:

• Jacob Wilson had 30 points and 14 rebounds as No. 11 Grasso Tech beat No. 22 Windham Tech, 87-69, in Class S.

Patrick Houlihan had 20 points and seven rebounds for Grasso (14-8), which will play at No. 6 Windsor Locks Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Tyreel Drayton and Devonta Willis both added 10 points for Grasso.

• Timothy Harris had 16 points for No. 17 Pomperaug of Southbury as it beat No. 16 Fitch, 61-53, in Class L. Pomperaug is 14-8. Greg Porter had 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Kwame Cole had eight points and eight rebounds for the Falcons (13-9). Josh Hohlfelder added 18 points.

• Phillip Starks had 30 points as No. 10 Prince Tech of Hartford beat No. 23 St. Bernard, 75-53, in Class S. Dajai Wilcox added 20 points for Prince Tech. Dylan Delacruz had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Saints (12-12) and Josh Bowyer added 12 points.

Boys' hockey

• James Stowe had two goals and Sean Hurley added three assists as the St. Bernard/Bacon Academy co-op beat Milford co-op, 4-0, in a CIAC Division II qualifying round game. The No. 17 Saints (10-11) play top-seeded Amity of Woodbridge Wednesday at West Haven High School (7:45 p.m.). Kenny Brooks and Jerry Theiler both scored for St. Bernard and Scott Steele had 22 saves.

College baseball

• Freshman Riley Beecher allowed just two hits over six innings with two earned runs, seven strikeouts and five walks to pick up his first collegiate win as Coast Guard Academy beat Kings Point, 13-6, in Fort Myers, Fla. Coast Guard (2-2) trailed 3-2 when it scored six runs in the top of the seventh and five runs in the eighth. Tyler Babkiewich had a double, triple and three runs for Coast Guard while Nolan Gallagher added two hits, including a double.

Women's basketball

• Two players with local ties have been selected to play in the New England Women's Basketball Association Senior All-Star Classic on March 27 at 1 p.m. at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.

Coast Guard Academy's Melissa Martinelli, who broke the Bears' career scoring record this season, will be joined in the game of Division III stars by Bowdoin College's Leah Rubega, a senior from Norwich Free Academy who has helped lead Bowdoin into the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

College cross country

• Connecticut College's men's and women's cross country teams were both honored with the team academic award by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The women's cross country team received the team academic award for the 18th consecutive year with a 3.68 grade point average, tying Case Western Reserve for the second highest team grade point average of the 153 teams that were honored. The men's team had a 3.33 GPA.

Sun offering scholarship

• The Connecticut Sun Foundation will be offering one $10,000 Bright Horizons Scholarship to a worthy candidate.

Applicants must be currently enrolled Connecticut high school seniors with an anticipated graduation date of spring 2010 who are eligible to attend an accredited college or university within the state. Applications must be received by June 1.
