United States must embrace nuclear power

In response to Matt Daly's commentary, "It's about time for America to 'go green - go nuclear,' " published March 7, I say, "Go, Matt!"
Our national energy policy is, frankly, an embarrassment. We proclaim to be universally committed to the development of green energy and to reducing our impact on the environment.
Sounds nice, doesn't it? But in reality, it seems we don't want to do the work to educate ourselves about energy alternatives, research what has worked in other parts of the world and, perhaps most difficult, admit that maybe, just maybe, nuclear power, when responsibly managed, isn't the monster we've all come together to love to hate.
We must demand that our government open the spent-fuel respository at Yucca Mountain. France and Finland produce spent fuel and they seem to be able to manage it successfully. Why can't we?
Wind and solar power are alternatives that should be pursued and included as part of the answer, but current technology in these fields provides minimal capacity.
We need to make informed, responsible choices. The solution isn't in a new technology, but rather in how we choose to embrace what already exists.
