Kudos to the team who dream of bringing the America's Cup defense to New London ("America's Cup in New London? Unofficial group floating the idea," published March 11).

There's a rich yachting history here; the town was a regular and favorite stop during the early years of the New York Yacht Club's summer cruise season, and many of the early Cup defenders, flying the club burgee, dropped their hooks in the Thames.

Last summer, dozens of boats from the club, which held the America's Cup for more than a century, stopped in Mystic and reminded us all of the positive impact, both culturally and economically, that yachting enthusiasts bring to our region. Many other yacht clubs up and down Long Island Sound and beyond have made port in our communities for decades and continue to do so every year, with much benefit to all.

Unfortunately, The Day overlooked 50 years of history when it reported that Newport and San Diego were the only American cities to host the cup defense - the first 13 matches, from 1870 through 1920, were held in New York Bay.
