In drug parlance, to "jones" is to have an addiction so overpowering that one will resort to any measures to obtain the desired narcotic. Sound familiar?
The Day's call for tolls in the editorial "Tolls the best solution," published March 16, along with regional planning agencies' claims of deprivation in the article "Municipal leaders call for local taxes," published March 15, have all the appeal of nails on chalkboard. I question the sanity of anyone, in this economy, who would campaign for greater burdens on Connecticut's already-overtaxed residents.
Isn't the New London Development Corp. a "regional planning agency"?
Moreover, when will we be down to four Connecticut congressional representatives?
I've sounded the call for local and state elected public servants to include links via their Web sites to the Connecticut Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports - the holy grail of accounting. I have asked The Day to delve into this subject and inform readers about the true wealth of local and state governments. The silence strikes me as an approval of business as usual.
The importance of this issue, juxtaposed with The Day's mission statement, reveal a fundamental disconnect.
