Mohegan - Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport scored the game's first nine points and never trailed as it defeated top-seeded Brookfield, 64-50, in the CIAC Class M girls' basketball championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena Friday night.

It was the seventh state championship for the No. 6 Cougars (21-6).

"(The fast start) goes back to the focus that they've shown," Kolbe coach Lisa Hodges said. "They were ready to play, they knew what to do and they handled it."

Tiarrah Thompson had a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Cougars. Ten of Thompson's rebounds were offensive as her team had 25 second-chance points.

"I think the difference in the game was (Thompson)," Brookfield coach Maura Keenan said. "She did a great job."

Cherelle Moore had 11 points and six rebounds and Jasmine Fogle added 13 points for Kolbe.

Jaime Bickelhaupt had 16 points and six rebounds for Brookfield (20-5).

Kolbe led the Bobcats by as much as 26 points (60-34) with four minutes, 15 seconds left in the game.

The Cougars beat Brookfield, a South-West Conference rival, in both meetings this season.
