Fitch senior improves times in 100 backstroke, 100 free from state meet

New Haven - Fitch High School's Emmett Dignan had a pair of second-place finishes during Saturday's CIAC State Open swimming and division championships at Yale University.

Dignan, a three-time winner during the Class M meet on Thursday, did better his times in the individual swims, however. He finished the 100-yard freestyle in 45.92 seconds, earning All-American status and finishing behind James Martin of the Bristol Co-op (45.67) and his time in the 100 backstroke was 52.11, finishing behind Fairfield Prep's Andrew Golankiewicz, who broke the meet and state record with a time of 51.01.

Dignan also joined teammates Luke Watson, Henry Kietzman and Tom Roland to earn a medal by placing third in the 200 medley relay in 1:36.89, also an All-American time..

Fitch finished seventh in the team standings with 184 points. Pomperaug of Southbury won the Open team title with 489 points.

In addition, Rowland was ninth in the 50 freestyle (21.89) and 24th in the 100 freestyle (49.46), Kietzman was 11th in the 100 butterfly (53.36), Watson was 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.84) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Aaron Dean, Kietzman, Rowland and Dignan placed seventh in 3:16.25.

College softball

• Hayley Feindel pitched a no-hitter in the opener as Coast Guard Academy swept a doubleheader against Castleton State, 6-0 and 6-1. Feindel had 13 strikeouts while Becky Miller added a two-run single for the Bears (7-3), while Carin Sweeney had three hits and two RBI in the second game and Maddie Buchert had two hits, including a homer.

• UConn lost two games at the Hofstra Tournament, losing to Hofstra 3-0 and to Boston University 6-4. Brittany Duclos, formerly of Fitch, had a double in game one and had a hit and scored a run in game two. UConn is 6-12.

College baseball

• Babson swept Coast Guard in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play, 9-3 and 11-6. Cameron Carroll had a two-run double in each game and Nolan Gallagher had a home run in game two for the Bears (4-6, 0-2).

• UConn-Avery Point swept Morris Community College (N.J.), 10-1 and 12-4. Ryan Fuller had four hits and five RBI in the two games, Jake Matuszak had four hits and Tyler McIntyre had four hits and three RBI for the Pointers (7-1).

• Mike Nemeth had three hits for UConn in an 11-8 loss to Sacred Heart. Doug Elliott had a triple for the Huskies (9-5) and George Springer added an RBI double.

Men's lacrosse

• Eric Doran scored three goals for Connecticut College in a 10-8 win over Amherst in New England Small College Athletic Conference play. John Lyons scored twice for Conn (4-0, 2-0), which beaten Amherst for the first time since 2001. Mark Mangano, Andrew Freedman, Steve Dachille, Steve Eicher and Mike Giambanco also scored for Conn.

Sun scholarship

• The Connecticut Sun Foundation will be offering one $10,000 Bright Horizons Scholarship to a worthy candidate. Applicants must be Connecticut high school seniors with an anticipated graduation date of spring 2010 who are eligible to attend an accredited college or university within the state.
