I was pleased to see the article titled "State lawmakers pushing for ban on cadmium in products for kids," published March 13.
As a parent and now grandparent of two, I am always concerned about the safety of the toys and products we give children. Cadmium is a known carcinogen and has no business being used in children's toys and jewelry.
Passing HB 5314, "An Act Banning Cadmium in Children's Jewelry," would be a positive step but would not address cadmium in plastic toys or other dangerous chemicals used in everyday products. Let's hope the state and federal governments proactively work to eliminate these chemicals of concern, at least in products used by children.
Another House bill before the current legislature, HB 5130 "The Child Safe Products Act," would solve the problem by creating a process for state agencies to work together on a list of the most toxic chemicals in children's products. These would then be phased out after being on the list for a few years.
Connecticut should take the lead in passing limits on cadmium and other toxic chemicals in children's products. Parents are tired of wondering if the products they buy for children are safe.
