Work on homelessness must be tackled by all

Efforts to address regional homelessness and lack of institutional mental health/addiction facilities are ultimately hypocritical if not coupled with a fully regional approach. ("Fundraiser at Preston VFW collects $12,000 for housing for homeless vets," March 16.)
Those forcing cities alone to bear the enormous costs of hosting quasi-institutional programs should be asked why their communities are unwilling to host these programs. Is this fundraising simply payment to send communities' problems elsewhere?
New London must insist that the suburbs share this burden, rather than expecting us to serve as a regional dumping ground for social problems.
True charity begins at home and requires not asking others to do what you will not.
