From the state that brought us Billy Gilman, 19-year-old Westerly native Nicolas King is already about 19 scrapbooks into his own career as a vocalist of impressive assurance and charm.
But while Gilman entered the public consciousness in country music, King is a crooner whose style, energy and voice evoke his own heroes, ranging from old school (Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald) to contemporary (Jamie Cullum, Harry Connick, Jr., and Justin Timberlake).
King plays Saturday in the Garde's Oasis Room, and his music director is none other than Mike Renzi, a five-time Emmy winner who has worked with Frank Sinatra, Bennett, Lena Horne and Diana Krall. Should be an impressive introduction to King's ascending star.
The Nicolas King Show with Mike Renzi, 8 p.m. Saturday, Oasis Room, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $35; (860) 444-7373, gardearts.org.
