Lohmann-Buck-Twining Preserve

Town: Old Lyme

Directions: From I-95, take Exit 70, straight off ramp, following signs to Rt. 156; pass shopping centers; at second light turn right onto 156 West towards Hamburg; go about 1 mile to right onto River View Drive. This is a narrow, unmarked road about 1/4 mile past sign for Talcott Farms at the mailbox that says "79." Preserve is about 1/4 mile on the right at a small pond and a stream.

Where to Park: Several cars can park along the side of the road near the entrance.

Description: Loop trail of about 1 mile; some steep, rugged terraine. Though it takes only about an hour, this is an interesting hike in what feels like an isolated patch of woodland along the Lieutenant River to a spectacular ridge where Long Island Sound and the Connecticut River are visible. Good views of an osprey nest on the river; one section of trail passes through a hemlock forest collapsing due to an infestation by wooly adelgid.

Regulations: No motorized vehicles; closed at sunset.

Amenities: None.

Natural Features: Trail follows river for about 2,000 feet, affording great views of the river across from the Kriebel Gallery of the Florence Griswold Museum. At overlook there are good views of the Connecticut River, Baldwin Bridge and Long Island Sound.

Fees: Free.

Good to know: Trail is mostly well marked with arrows, but watch for spot where trail turns to the left up the the ridge, and another after the overlook where the trail turns back to the right.
