URI boat heading to Gulf of Mexico

South Kingstown, R.I. - A University of Rhode Island research boat is headed to the Gulf of Mexico to find and measure plumes of oil.

The boat, named Endeavor, will be joined by an underwater vehicle from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. The vehicle, which can operate alone in deep water, will take digital photos and water samples and look for signs of oil in the Gulf.

Sam DeBow, Endeavor marine superintendent, says the information could help scientists predict where the oil is headed.

A BP oil rig exploded in April, killing 11 workers and rupturing the wellhead a mile below the surface.
