A community garden differs from a farm

While I am grateful for articles highlighting local agriculture, and I applaud the Ledyard people who hope to begin a community supported agriculture venture, The Day made an unfortunate error by using the phrase "community garden." ("Couple resurrects old Town Farm in Ledyard, plans to start community garden," July 21.)
The couple mentioned in the article will operate a farm, not start a community garden. A community garden is not a farm, but a large, unused tract of land that a group turns into a garden. The land is generally owned by the town or a private organization that leases it to the group. Each person takes charge of one or two plots for growing vegetables. There is a nominal yearly fee to cover costs.
Community gardens are ideal for people who live in condos, apartments or rentals where there is no land to garden. But homeowners, too, can participate. Community gardens are, essentially, owned by the whole community. They allow community members to connect with one another, grow their own food and get out in the sunshine.
Many community gardens are forming in southeastern Connecticut. For information, contact F.R.E.S.H. New London or the Community Harvest Network. Both are active in creating community gardens.
