Griswold — Duane Button, owner of Buttonwood Farm, gave his cows a special treat this week and allowed his herd to eat about 4 acres of sunflowers.
Button grows the sunflowers for his annual Sunflowers for Wishes event, which raises money for the Make-A-Wish foundation.
This year more than $100,000 was raised, a record for the event that started seven years ago.
The cows were set free Wednesday and given rein of the pasture. In the past, Button said, it has taken the cows about 2½ days to level the field, where families the week before were given hayrides to get up close to the sunny yellow blossoms.
The Day hosted a web chat with New London Mayor Daryl J. Finizio to discuss the beginning of his new administration and news out of the city's police department.
