Stonington - A building that will house a new Tractor Supply Co. store is under construction on Route 2 in Pawcatuck and expected to be completed by November.
After the Planning & Zoning Commission approved the necessary permits in May for New England Retail Properties Inc. of Wethersfield, the company broke ground in June on land purchased by Windham Crossing LLC, said Mark D'Addabbo, the project's real estate developer.
D'Addabbo would not disclose the purchase price.
"I know Tractor Supply is excited about coming to that part of the state," he said.
The 19,000-square-foot, single-story building is being erected along the east side of Route 2 between the La Quinta Inn & Suites and the state commuter parking lot. The property will also house a 15,000-square-foot outside display area.
The siding on the building is made of a cement board brand known as Hardi Plank that will resemble clapboard, D'Addabbo said.
Based in Brentwood, Tenn., the 71-year-old Tractor Supply Co. employs 10,000 people in more than 800 stores in 40 states. This store will employ between 15 and 20 full- and part-time workers, depending on the season, D'Addabbo said.
The stores sell farming and livestock equipment and supplies, lawn and garden supplies, outdoor work clothing and footwear, fencing, power tools and mowers, pet supplies and other items. There are Tractor Supply stores in Griswold, North Windham and Putnam.
