In June of 2008, about 65 people packed the conference room at Town Hall to recognize a man who selflessly helps keep downtown Jewett City clean.
Alphonse Basilicato, or Al to his friends and family, has for more than a decade worked to keep the borough clean. Seriously. He’s like a postal carrier: "Neither rain nor hail nor sleet nor snow nor heat of day nor dark of night…” will keep Al from keeping the streets, alleys, parking lots and sidewalks clean.
Al suffers from a traumatic brain injury and seizures, the result of being hit by a drunk driver when he was in his early 20s.
The only thing that has kept him from his tasks is his health and another car accident.
Really. Al was hit by a car this spring and has been out of commission ever since, according to borough burgess and friend Alan Geer.
Al fractured his pelvis and one of his arms. He was in the hospital for some time and has been undergoing physical therapy.
He’s back home now and today at 4:30 in the Town Hall conference room – the same place that two years prior people gathered to thank him for his tireless work – the group will welcome him back.
“He’s been greatly missed,” Geer said.
