Edsall calls out both lines

Randy Edsall’s initial observations following Saturday’s 30-10 loss at Michigan didn’t change after watching film on the flight home.
Edsall did, however, express his dissatisfaction with his veteran linemen … and on both sides of the ball.

“The offensive line as a whole … I didn’t think they were very good,” Edsall said during a Sunday conference call. “I think we got whupped on both sides of the line of scrimmage. I would hope it’s not from overconfidence because Michigan is a good football team.

“But we didn’t win the battle in the trenches and that’s what I told them going in we had to do. We’ve got to get more physical on both sides of the ball.’

Other than that, Edsall reiterated his disappointed with inconsistent play and mistakes, which included (by his count) seven dropped passes and some poorly thrown balls by quarterback Zach Frazer.

UConn’s inability to get off the field on third down (Michigan converted 14 of 19) and his offense’s poor third down execution (4 of 15) will also be addressed this week.

“It was very disappointing that we didn’t capitalize on the opportunities we had during the game,” he said. “Yet as bad as we played, to be able to have a situation where had we been able to make it a seven-point game with two minutes left in the third quarter showed that we competed.

“We just didn’t play like we should have. … We’ve got to learn from it, get things corrected and move forward, which I think this team will do.”

Edsall wouldn’t discuss injuries. The Big East instituted a new policy this year where it will release an injury report on Monday with updates on Thursday.

“I’ve got no comment on anybody,” he said. “(The Big East) is gonna put those things out and that gives everybody the information they need.”

There has been speculation that linebacker Scott Lutrus, who was slowed by a neck and shoulder “stinger” injury last season, may have aggravated that injury Saturday. He missed stretches of the Michigan game. We’ll have to wait until Monday, however, to find out if that is true.
