In March, Secretary of State

Hillary Clinton authorized the State Department to spend $5.4 million to buy crystal stemware for American embassies. The contract was given to a Swedish firm, even though there were American companies capable of doing the work.

President Barack Obama recently authorized that $800,000 be spent to redecorate the Oval Office. Now, I don't particularly like either Secretary Clinton or President Obama, but for ideological reasons. I don't think either of them are stupid. Therefore, they both had to know that in this economy people are going to find these expenditures highly offensive.

So if stupidity isn't the answer, why did they spend so much money on nonessentials? The only logical answer is because they don't care what we, the little people, think.

Look again at the costs: $5.4 million for glasses and $800,000 for a new rug and a couch. Had this been done by a Republican administration, it would have been front page, above the fold in The Day but, alas, I had to read about it in the New York Post.

Oh well, blame it on George W. Bush.

Editor's note: The White House Historical Association, not the taxpayers, paid for the Oval Office renovations. The cost was not disclosed.
