Thompson - A 49-year-old Groton man was listed in serious condition Saturday at a Massachusetts hospital after striking his head during a motorcycle accident Friday afternoon.

Alexander Atkinson, of 899 Old Buddington Road, was riding with a group of motorcyclists when he lost control of his vehicle while driving south on Quaddick Town Farm Road, according to a police report from the state police Troop D in Danielson. Atkinson was not wearing a helmet, police said.

He had been with a group of riders when one of them apparently stopped, and Atkinson tried to avoid rear-ending the motorcyclist, according to police.

Atkinson first was transported to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, but then was transferred to the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
