New London – The cruise ship Crown Princess first appeared in the Thames River before dawn this morning as a moving wall of twinkling lights.

The Princess Cruises line ship carrying more than 3,000 passengers and more than 1,000 crew members then made a "three-point turn" just past Fort Trumbull State Park before motoring in reverse up the river to dock Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier at 7 a.m.

Connecticut Cruise Ship Task Force director George Cassidy said the ship's arrival in New London went smoothly. "It's pretty routine at this point," Cassidy said.

Fife and drum music from the Nutmeg Volunteers greeted the passengers as they disembarked and boarded motorcoaches bound for downtown New London and local attractions.

The Crown Princess, which made a stop in New London on Sept. 18, left New York on Thursday and made her first port call Friday in Newport, R.I.

The ship will leave New London at 2 p.m. for Portland, Maine. The ship will also make stops in Boston; St. John, New Brunswick; and Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia, and will end its 10-day trip in Quebec City.
