Yesterday was definitely an adventure. We began the day with a visit to the K.A.C.C.O. Site. It stands for kaberamaido child care organization. Right where the children's center will be. Our bus pulled in and we were greeted with a high pitched beautiful sound coming from a woman carrying a white peace flag. She led us further into the village where over 100 people were waiting for us. They began singing and dancing right away which brought most of us to tears. Their shining smiling faces were heartwarming.
They asked me to play along with them on my guitar which I gladly accepted. Martha introduced our group and said a prayer in their native language, Kumam, which they greatly appreciated. Then we walked to where to well had recently been drilled and saw the beginning of the fencing and where future buildings will go. Martha cut a ribbon and pumped water out of the well. It was absolutely amazing to watch! when it was time to leave they walked us back to the bus and waited for us to drive away, waving until we were out of sight. I immediately wanted to go back and spend the rest of the trip with them but knew we had so much more to accomplish and get done! Until next time I suppose.
We then drove about an hour on a dirt road until we reached our next destination which was an all girls school called St.Thomas secondary school for girls.
The girls were so happy and performed a beautiful drama piece along with song and dance. We passed out medical supplies and sweeties (candy) afterwards!
When it was time to leave we said our goodbyes (which is always difficult) and began heading back to town. We decided to take a quicker route back, however, we hadn't realized it had rained early that morning and most of the roads were complete mud. Suddenly our bus was stuck, the more we tried to reverse, the deeper we sank. We evacuated it and tried to push... There were about 20 men from a nearby village helping as well. After a great amount of pushing, we eventually got out and continued on, thinking we were in the clear. Unfortunately, twenty minutes later we were stuck again and this time there was no getting out of it at least for awhile. The sun was rapidly setting and mosquitoes began to feast on our skin. Chris, Martha's good friend and member of Call To Care, thankfully had a friend pick us up. A few of us fell in the mud on the way to his vehicle which was extremely smelly on the ride back :)
Finally reaching the guest house, we ran to the showers to wash off the mud! The bus arrived a few hours later, we were so glad to see them back home safe and sound.
This was definitely an experience we shall remember for years to come!
