Waterford - Waterford High School rode the strength of its lightweights to a season-opening 40-36 wrestling victory over Montville on Wednesday night.
The Lancers won five of the first six matches, including pins by Colin O'Brien (125 pounds) and Tom Millaras (135) to build an early 22-6 lead, and then held off the Indians. Matt Tulba's pin at 189 clinched it for Waterford, which also picked up pins from Collin McCarthy (145) and Clancy Emanuel (152).
Jake Caskey (119), Dayvon Wynn (140), Dan Kurasz (160), Brian McMahon (215) and Ryan Murtha (285) had pins for Montville.
In other matches:
• Defending Class M champion Bacon Academy won 11 matches by pin and opened the regular season with a 78-3 win over New London.
Irwin Vasquez (103), Matt McAllister (112), Nick Dodge (125), Sean McAllister (130), Brandin Holroyd (140), Corey Geisman (145), Kyle Elmy (152), Devin Covone (160), Tyler Dufour (189), Tom Scott (215) and Dylan Kniska (Hwt.) all won by pin for the Bobcats.
Cesar Santiago won a decision at 135 for New London's lone win.
• Jake Kalleher (152), Josh Ross (160), Joseph Leonard (171) and Alex Cusano (189) each won by pin as East Lyme opened the season with a 42-36 win over St. Bernard.
Tim Neilan (135) and Paul Steinhagen (145) each won by pin for the Saints.
• Norwich Free Academy overcame an early 11-point deficit to defeat Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech, 50-29.
Michael Estrada (135), Nick Cipriano (152), Luke Hage (171) and Brian Duggan (189) had pins for NFA, while Cody Lohbush (112), David Johnston (119), Jake Alderman (140) and Adam Makain (145) recorded pins for Lyman.
• Cameron Gonzalez had Fitch's lone win, a pin at 160 pounds, in a 69-6 season-opening loss at Windham.
• Nick Lauer (103), Anthony Goncalves (130), Brandon Finney (135), Ryan Lyons (140), Mike Spellman (189), Josh Lawrence (215) and Ben Morales (285) all had pins as Ledyard opened its season with a 59-9 win over Killingly.
H.S. girls' basketball
• Sonia Woods scored a game-high 24 points - including six 3-pointers - and had five steals as Old Lyme won its first game, 59-46, over Valley Regional in the Shoreline Conference.
Abby Wilkman had 12 points and 14 rebounds and Elise Beauprez added 11 points for Old Lyme (1-2). Valley is 0-3.
Boys' swimming
• Adam Opsahl won two individual events (200 IM, 100 butterfly) and East Lyme won all three relay events in a season-opening 102-82 nonleague win over Middletown, its first win over the Dragons in five years.
Men's basketball
• Roy Mabrey led five players in double figure scoring with 27 points and St. Thomas More defeated South Kent, 86-76.
Jarell Byrd had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Indiana Faithfull had 11 points and nine assists for the Chancellors (10-1). South Kent is 8-3.
