Local roundup: Conn women's big 2nd period leads to 4-3 win

Camels score 3 times in stanza to top Bowdoin

New London - The Connecticut College women's hockey team scored three goals in the second period and went on to beat Bowdoin 4-3 Sunday in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Samantha Schuffenecker, Sam Schoeneberger, Courtney Dumont and Kelsey Kirker scored for Conn (7-7, 5-5), Ashley Kowtoniuk had two assists and Amy Leichliter made 33 saves.

Dominique Lozzi had a goal and an assist for Bowdoin (8-5-1, 5-3).

College men's basketball

• St. Thomas More lost to Hargrave Military Academy of Virginia 78-58 at Springfield, Mass. Damion Lee scored 15 points and Andre Drummond had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for T-More (12-2).

H.S. hockey

• Rockville/Manchester/Rocky Hill scored four goals in the first period and went on to beat Fitch/East Lyme/Ledyard 6-1 Saturday night. Luca Addabbo scored a third-period goal for FEL (0-7), Pete Gonski had an assist and Alden Burns made 43 saves.

H.S. wrestling

• Waterford's Joelle Nieves went 5-0 at 112 pounds as the Lancers went 2-3 Saturday at the Art Powers Duals in Berlin. Waterford (4-5) beat Terryville 38-36 and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 72-9 and lost to Berlin 63-6, RHAM 57-18 and Hand 64-10. Tom Millaras and Matt Tulba won four matches each and Shane Manley won three times for Waterford.

Waterford Speedbowl

• Keith Rocco, the Whelen All-American Series champion at the Waterford Speedbowl, was among the honored drivers Saturday night at the Groton Inn & Suites. Also honored were division champions Tim Jordan (Late Models), Al Stone III (Street Stocks), Ken Cassidy Jr. (Mini Stocks) and Allen Coates (trucks).

Sixteen-year-old Anthony Flannery, who became the youngest track champion, was also honored for winning the Saturday Legends Cars series. Winning awards for top rookies were Kyle James (SK Modifieds), Jason Palmer (Late Models), Norm Sears (Street Stocks), Steve Violette (Mini Stocks) and Corey Coates (Trucks). For the Legends, Rookie of the Year honors went to Joey Mucciacciaro.
