Local roundup: Griswold wrestling remains unbeaten

Wolverines get four pins on way to 50-24 win over Killingly

Griswold — Griswold High School's wrestling team won the first five matches Wednesday, three by pin, and stayed unbeaten with a 50-24 win over Killingly in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division.

Zach Labbe (130), Kyle Dombrowski (135), Brandon McNeil (152) and Aaron Wing (171) won by pinfall for the Wolverines (5-0, 4-0), while Dylan Martel (103) and Jacob Bixby (112) each won by major decision.

In other matches:

• Thomas Finney (140 pounds), Brendan Sullivan (152), Dakota Kelly (171), Mike Spellman (189) and Ben Morales (heavyweight) all had first-period pins for seventh-ranked Ledyard in a 75-0 win over Fitch in the ECC Large Division. Robby Drury (119), Brandon Finney (130) and Anthony Goncalves (135) also had pins and Mike Graff (125) and Josh Lawrence won by technical fall for Ledyard (12-1, 5-0).

• Norwich Free Academy won nine of the 10 contested matches by pin and defeated Woodstock Academy 75-6 in the ECC Large. Joey Ballestrini (103), Dan Britos (119), Pat Messick (125), Eric Diamlanta (130), Tyler Courter (135), Edgar Charles (145), Nick Cipriano (152), Luke Hage (171) and Brian Duggan (189) each won by pinfall for the Wildcats (17-5, 3-1).

• Nick Dodge (130), P.J. Sawicki (215) and Dylan Kniska (Hwt.) all won by pin in less than a minute and sixth-ranked Bacon Academy defeated East Lyme 68-12 in the ECC Large. Devin Covone (160) and Tyler Dufour (171) also won by pin and Sean McAllister (135) won by technical fall for the Bobcats (9-4, 3-1). Kareem Small (103) and Josh Ross (145) each won by pin for East Lyme (3-8, 1-4).

• St. Bernard won the first match at 189 pounds, but Waterford won the next six, including pins by Shane Manley (215), Joelle Nieves (112) and Colin O'Brien (125) and Waterford went on to beat the Saints 66-12. Alex Johnson won the 189-pound match by pin for St. Bernard (0-8). Russell Wade (160) and Matt Tulba (171) added pins for Waterford (5-5).

• Joe Rainville (103), Stephen Rogers (112), Nick Bellerose (130), Dayvon Wynn (135), Ryan Hewitt (140), Pat Bogan (145), Dan Kurasz (160), Brian McMahon (215) and Ryan Murtha (Hwt.) each won by pinfall and Montville defeated New London 78-6 in the ECC Small. Harley Cantave (189) picked up the lone points for New London (3-11, 1-3) with a pin. Montville is 9-7, 2-2.

H.S. hockey

• Sean Hurley scored the last of his three goals with just over a minute remaining in regulation as St. Bernard/Bacon/NFA defeated Milford 3-2. James Stowe assisted on all three goals and Evan Callahan had 11 saves for the Saints (5-4).

H.S. swimming

• Zach Tryopolis (200-meter freestyle, 100 butterfly), John Stockman (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) and Josh Morency (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) won two events each as Waterford topped New London/Montville 108-52 in the ECC. New London (0-7, 0-7) won all three relay events. Matt Zimmer (400 freestyle) and Justin Dobush (diving) also won events for Waterford (2-3, 2-1).

Women's hockey

• Caroline Corbett and Brigid O'Callahan scored 40 seconds apart in the third period and Connecticut College won its third straight game, 5-3 over UMass-Boston. Courtney Dumont and Ariel DiPasquale each had a goal and an assist for the Camels (8-7).

Men's basketball

• Senior Jevon James posted career highs in points (25) and blocked shots (six) as well as a season high in rebounds (15) to lead Coast Guard to a 90-77 win over Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Freshman Devonte Weems also scored a career-high 21 points, while Kevin Sowers scored 18 points and Adam Radtke added 14 for the Bears (8-8, 3-2)

• B.J. Cardarelli led four players in double figures with 15 points and St. Thomas More defeated Redemption Christian Academy 81-70. Dom Spann scored 13 points and Adam Jones and Whis Grant scored 12 apiece for the Chancellors (14-2).

Women's basketball

• Angelica Pascual scored a game-high 15 points and Mount Holyoke defeated Coast Guard 48-30 in the NEWMAC. Allison Majcher had eight points and seven rebounds for Coast Guard (2-12, 0-9).

College wrestling

• Freshman Lucas Taylor won twice at 165 pounds, but Coast Guard Academy lost a pair of matches at home. Southern Maine beat the Bears 22-19 in a Pilgrim League match before Coast Guard lost to Merchant Marine 45-4 in a nonconference match.

The match with Southern Maine was tied 16-16 before Travis Spencer registered a pin at 197 pounds to give the Huskies a 22-16 edge. Coast Guard heavyweight John Manganiello won a decision 4-2, but it wasn't enough in the final bout. Andy Snyder (157) and Taylor (165) won by pin and Will Stark (174) won a major decision to give the Bears a 16-13 lead against Southern Maine.

Taylor won a major decision 10-0 for the Bears' only points vs. Merchant Marine.

Coast Guard dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the Pilgrim League.
