Private label organic bagged salads voluntarily recalled

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is voluntarily recalling several Nature’s Promise organic bagged salads due to the potential for listeria contamination.

The voluntary recall is part of a larger recall affecting State Garden of Chelsea, Mass., a supplier for private label salad products and blends. State Garden supplied these products and has issued voluntary recalls for other brands sold in other markets as well.

Those brands include Gold Quality sold at A&P, Hannaford/Sweetbay, Signature sold at Shaw’s, Roche Bros sold at Roche Bros, Wegmans sold at Wegmans, and Northeast Fresh and Olivia’s Organics, both sold at various locations.

All affected Stop & Shop products contain a “Best if Used By” date of Jan. 15. The recall covers the store’s territories in New York and New England, Stop & Shop spokeswoman Suzi Robinson said.

Customers who have these products should discard them and bring their purchase receipt to any Stop & Shop for a full refund.

So far, Stop & Shop and State Garden say they have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products.

Listeria is a common organism found in nature. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, which can arise up to several weeks after consumption.
