The Day Publishing Co. today announced its intention to enter into a multi-year business partnership with The Providence Journal that would include the production and distribution of both companies' newspaper products.
The partnership plan would include the transfer before April 1 of the printing of The Day newspaper to the Providence Journal's production facilities in Rhode Island. Since the beginning of this year, The Day has been inserting, labeling and mailing more than 150,000 copies of the Providence Journal's weekly advertising circular at its New London printing facilities.
The Day will continue to print, insert and mail its Times weekly newspapers as well as the weeklies produced by its Shore Publishing division at its Eugene O'Neill printing operations in New London. Moving the printing of The Day newspaper to the Providence facility will result in the elimination of some jobs in the company's operations division, although the actual number is still to be determined.
"I recognize and deeply regret the hardship this announcement will place on the good employees who will be affected by job loss," said Gary Farrugia, The Day's publisher. He said the move represents a "strategic pivot" for The Day. "As the economy shows signs of recovery, we are forging full speed ahead as an information company distributing on multiple platforms," he said.
Farrugia said the new multi-year partnership with the Providence-based media company will result in "significant efficiencies and cost savings" for both companies.
