The Gallery of Fine Art @ Venetucci Home explores the application of calligraphy and typography as an artful expression in The Read Letter, on exhibit from Tuesday, Feb. 1 through 28. The public is invited to an artists' reception on Sunday, Feb. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery, 433 Boston Post Road, Westbrook.

The Read Letter features works by calligrapher Maureen Squires, along with Suzie Cappezone, Laurencia Ciprus, and Lisa Fatone.

Squires's passion for calligraphy dates back to her college days, when two undergraduate courses in the art form challenger her to learn many alphabets and their origins. She spent two additional years with Arnold Bank at Carnegie Mellon studying advanced calligraphy. As time progressed, the alphabet and the calligraphic/gestural line became her primary subject matter, sometimes with text and sometimes without. Her current work is about creating atmospheres that reflect the words she writes or simply creating an atmosphere.

The Gallery of Fine Art @ Venetucci Home is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.gofavenetucci.blogspot.com.
