Colonels top Griswold, NFA, finish unbeaten in ECC Large Division

Ledyard - The Ledyard High School wrestling team picked up a pair of victories Thursday, beating Griswold 46-19 and finishing off an undefeated Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division regular season with a 49-19 win over Norwich Free Academy.

Mike Spellman (189 pounds) and Josh Lawrence (215) had a pair of pins each for the Colonels (17-1, 6-0). Dean Gilbert (22-2), Dakota Kelly (23-4) and Brendan Sullivan (21-3) have each reached the 20-win mark for Ledyard. Brandon Walsh won by pin for Griswold (11-1) and Trevor Browning and Tyler Courter had pins for NFA (21-9, 3-2).

In other matches:

• Corey Geisman started off the match with a pin at 145 pounds and fourth-ranked Bacon Academy topped Waterford 54-16 in the ECC Large Division. Devin Covone (160), Aren Norman (189), Dylan Kniska (heavyweight) and Chris Elrod (119) also had pins for Bacon (14-5, 5-1) and Tom Scott (215), Matt McAllister (112) and Nick Dodge (125) won by major decision. Waterford is 9-7, 2-3.

• East Lyme lost to Windham 53-23, but got pins from Josh Ross (145), Alex Cusano (160) and a technical fall from Jake Kaleher (152).

H.S. hockey

• James Stowe had a goal and an assist to lead the St. Bernard-Bacon-NFA cooperative over Sheehan 4-3. McCullough added two assists and Zack Turek, Eric Barlow and Eric Butrymowicz each scored a goal for St. Bernard (6-5). Sheehan fell to 5-5.

H.S. swimming

• John Stockman and Josh Morency each won two events, leading Waterford to a 100-79 win over NFA in an ECC meet. Stockman won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke and Morency won the 50 and 100 freestyles for the Lancers (5-4, 4-2). Justin Paz won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for NFA (2-5, 2-5).

• Aidan Quinn (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Luke Watson (100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Christian Berg (500 freestyle, 100 backstroke) each won two individual events for Fitch as the Falcons beat Ledyard-Stonington 99-64 at UConn-Avery Point. Berg, Watson, Quinn and Matt Houser also teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.24. Kyle Parry swam on a pair of winning relays for Ledyard-Stonington (4-4, 3-4 ECC). Fitch is 7-1, 6-1.

Lozada to New Haven

• New London High School's Carlos Lozada signed an athletic scholarship Wednesday with the University of New Haven to play football. Lozada, a linebacker, had 81 tackles and two sacks for the Whalers and also rushed for five touchdowns. He was selected to The Day's All-Area team, too.

Women's basketball

• The Mitchell College women's basketball team fended off a comeback attempt in the second half and finished off a 67-56 victory over Newbury College. Mitchell forced 27 turnovers, giving the Mariners a 31-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Mitchell's Alix O'Neil led all scorers with 23 points and added 10 rebounds. Mitchell is 11-6 overall, 8-2 in the NECC; Newbury is 8-12, 6-5.

Men's basketball

• Freshman Tim Quinn led Mitchell College with 19 points and four assists, but the Mariners fell to Elms College, 96-62. Paul Jefferson also had 14 points with four 3-pointers for Mitchell (1-18 overall, 0-10 NECC). Elms (14-6, 7-2) got 24 points from Edgar Martinez on 11-for-11 shooting.

• Matt Vadas had 15 points to lead Connecticut College in a 71-66 loss to 14th-ranked Western Connecticut State. Conn pulled within 65-62 on a 3-pointer by Rob Harrigan with 3:43 to go, but couldn't get any closer against the Colonials. Brian Mahoney and Taylor Hanson scored 11 points each for Conn (10-11). Western Connecticut is 18-2.

• Coast Guard fell to Springfield in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game, 72-44. Ed Gailor scored nine points for Coast Guard (8-11, 3-5), which shot a season-low 25.5 percent from the field. Springfield is 12-8, 5-3.

• Andre Drummond had 17 points and eight rebounds in a losing effort for St. Thomas More, which fell 71-67 to Notre Dame Prep. Damion Lee added 13 points and Jerell Byrd scored 11 for the Chancellors (17-4).
