No. 12 WPI topples CGA

New London - Matt Carr had 10 points and 12 rebounds as nationally-ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute defeated Coast Guard Academy 60-47 Wednesday night in a New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference men's basketball game.

Ryan Kolb and Jerome Stewart both had 11 points for WPI (19-3, 9-0), ranked 12th in the latest Division III poll.

Ed Gailor and Kevin Sowers each had 11 points for the Bears (8-13, 3-7) and Adam Radtke added 10 points.

In another game:

• St. Thomas More lost for the fifth time this season, dropping a 66-64 decision to Northfield Mount Hermon. Andre Drummond had 13 points and 19 rebounds and Roy Mabrey added 16 points for the Chancellors (19-5).

Women's basketball

• Kelly Murphy had 18 points and East Lyme's Emily Walker had a game-high 10 rebounds as Springfield College rallied to beat Coast Guard, 54-46, in the NEWMAC. Kelly Slattery had 14 points for Springfield (10-12, 10-5), which trailed at halftime, 23-20. Karli Collins had nine points and nine rebounds for the Bears (2-19, 0-15) and Larla Brown had 19 points.

Men's swimming

• Coast Guard is ranked 24th in the latest Division III national poll. The Bears completed their dual season with a 9-1 record (19-2 over the past two seasons) and will compete in the NEWMAC Championships Feb. 25-17 at MIT. Coast Guard has finished first or second the last five seasons, winning the title in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and placing second the past two years. The Bears are led by senior Alex Brown, the reigning NEWMAC 200 freestle champion, and sophomore Nick Poehler, last year's NEWMAC Rookie of the Year.

Lawson at grand opening

• Kara Lawson, a starting guard with the Connecticut Sun, will be a special guest today at the grand opening of the Renegade Sports Center on Fargo Road in Waterford (off Rte. 85). The center is now home of Velocity Sports Performance, a training facility for athletes of all ages. Today's event begins at 5:30 p.m.
