Montville - Sam Donahue and Will Defanti combined for 31 points and 17 rebounds, leading No. 7 Stonington High School to a 49-33 victory over No. 2 Norwich Free Academy on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' basketball tournament.
NFA had played in the last five ECC title games, winning in 2007.
"The biggest thing we did well was rebound (29 total),'' Stonington coach Mike Reyes said. "We only gave up four offensively. We're really starting to click. Hopefully we'll continue to do that next week.''
Donahue had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Defanti scored 15 with 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Bears (17-5), who play No. 6 Waterford in Wednesday's semifinal at 6 p.m. at New London.
Waterford beat Stonington, 80-78 in double overtime (Dec. 23, 2010), in the only regular season meeting between the two.
Freshman Marcus Outlow led NFA (14-7) with nine points.
In other games:
• Kris Dunn had 32 points and 11 rebounds to pace top-seeded New London past Windham, 98-67.
New London (21-0), which has won the previous three conference championships, will play host to No. 5 Plainfield on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Plainfield beat No. 4 Bacon Academy, 68-63.
Keith Porter added 17 points for New London.
Isiah Spain scored 15 points for the No. 9 Whippets (12-9).
• Davonta Valentine had 21 points, seven steals, five rebounds and five assists as Waterford beat East Lyme, 67-59.
Geary McLeod had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists for Waterford (13-9) and Nolan Long added nine points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Angel Ortiz had 29 points for the No. 3 Vikings (12-9).
• Javon Thorbourne had 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds and Thomas Whipple added 12 points and 15 rebounds as St. Thomas More beat Providence Country Day, 56-49, for its first SENE championship.
Matt Middler had seven points and 12 rebounds for T-More and Bilal Pankey added 11 points.
• Nick Carlson had 19 points as No. 6 Old Lyme upset No. 3 Hyde of New Haven, 61-51, in a Shoreline Conference quarterfinal. George Logan had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Old Lyme (11-10) and Colin Devlin added eight points and eight rebounds. The Howling Wolves (14-6) are the defending conference and CIAC Class S champion.
Girls' basketball
• Kylie Fustini had 12 points and 13 rebounds as Ledyard, the 36th and final seed in Class M, upended No. 29 Sheehan of Wallingford, 42-39, in a qualifying round game.
Sara Ewing had 10 points and seven rebounds for Ledyard (9-13). It will play at No. 4 Ellington (19-3) in Tuesday's first round at 7 p.m.
H.S. gymnastics
• Stonington High School placed fifth at the CIAC Class S championship at New Milford.
Valley Regional of Deep River won the meet (132.45 points) and the Bears had 114.400 points. Reanna Barker, Melanie Floyd, Paige Hackney, Danielle Jacobs, Hope Rezendes and Lauren Valenti represented Stonington.
• Norwich Free Academy placed sixth (121.550 points) at the Class L championships at New Milford.
Glastonbury won with 142.300 points. Caroline Beasley, Ashley Bubna, Katherine Gabriele, Schyler Lamaire and Michaela Loubier competed for NFA.
H.S. hockey
• Peter Gonski had two goals and Ryan Pivirotto had a goal and an assist for Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard in its 6-3 loss to Guilford late Friday. Alden Burns had 47 saves for the Eagles (1-16).
