T-More reaches semis

Beverly, Mass. — Adam Jones had 14 points and Roy Mabrey added 13 as second-seeded St. Thomas More defeated No. 7 South Kent, 80-52, in a New England Class AAA men's basketball tournament quarterfinal game at at Endicott College on Wednesday.

Andre Drummond had 12 points and Damion Lee had 10 points for T-More (27-6), which will play No. 3 New Hampton in Friday's semifinals at 7 p.m. No. 1 Brewster Academy will face No. 4 Maine Central Institute in the other semifinal.

Local honors

• Waterford's Karli Spera and Griswold's Stephanie Slonski, who helped lead Western Connecticut to the Little East Conference women's basketball championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament, were recently honored. Spera, a senior guard, was selected to the All-Little East first team and Slonski, a junior guard, made the All-Defensive team.

• East Lyme's Dana Tricarico, a member of the Siena College swim team, helped the Saints to a fourth-place finish in the recent Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet in Buffalo, N.Y. Tricarico, a freshman, helped the 200 freestyle relay team place third and set a school record. She also earned a spot in the finals of the 50 freestyle and had had ECAC qualifying times in the 50 free, 100 free and relay.

• A pair of former local stars - Old Lyme's Ryan Zrenda and St. Bernard's Pat Lowry - have been selected to the preseason All-Ivy League team by Baseball America. Zrenda, a senior third baseman at Brown, hit .357 a year ago with 11 home runs, 30 RBI, 35 runs and a .637 slugging percentage. Lowry, a junior pitcher at Columbia, went 5-3 in 2010 with a 3.46 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Baseball

• Norwich's Dodd Stadium has been selected to host the 2011 Northeast Conference tournament May 19-22. It will be a four-team double-elimination tournament and the winner will receive an automatic bid in the NCAA Division I tournament. Central Connecticut is the defending tourney champion and the NEC features two other Connecticut schools - Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart.
