As a grade schooler, most of my daydreams would consist of what I would do if I were an administrator. Three-hour gym classes, no homework and plenty of candy would be a few of the things I would implement as head of the school.
After reading Dr. Seuss' book "If I ran the zoo," North Stonington Elementary School held a contest asking students what they would do if they ran the school. The winner got to act as principal for a day. What power!!!!
The winner was third-grader Ian Spracklin, who got to take over for principal Veronica Wilkison during the March 24 school day.
Here are the grade level winners and their teachers:
Kindergarten Julianna Russell Mrs. Holland
Grade 1 Madison Perkins Mrs. Bennett
Grade 2 Laura Robert Mrs. Mirando
Grade 3 Ian Spracklin Mrs. Kiddy
Grade 4 Michael Warren Mr. Brownell
Grade 5 Hunter Caswell Mrs. Hines
Here are Ian's winning answers (thanks to Mike Noonan for the pictures and answers!):
If I Ran the School…
If I ran the school, I would make the following changes:
1. I would make 40 minute recesses so kids could get more fresh air and exercise.
2. We would have air-conditioned classrooms for the hot summer days.
3. We would have more pencils if students don't have any.
4. There would be more supplies for gym for fun-filled exercising.
Afterwards, Ian was "debriefed" on his whirl-wind day:
1. What did you think the principal did for a job and is it like what you thought?
I thought that she went to the classrooms and checked on them. I liked it.
2. Name one thing that the principal does that surprises you?
She signs a lot of papers!
3. What do you think the best part of being a principal might be?
Going around and asking the people what they are doing and how it is going.
4. What do you think is the worst thing a principal might do?
If the principal didn't discipline someone for something that they did wrong.
5. What kinds of things did you do as a principal today?
Walked around the classrooms, walked around the lunchroom during Kindergarten lunchtime and passed out erasers for good behavior.
6. Would you like to be a principal one day?
Sort of- because you get to see what the kids are doing. I would like to help out with other students who need help.
Congrats to Ian and all who participated!
