Did you go to the special town meeting in North Stonington Monday night?
First Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane said close to 95 people turned out for the event, which was moved to the elementary school for more space.
The meeting was called after 50 residents signed a petition asking the selectmen to enter into a lease contract with Fotis Georgiadis, owner of Buon Appetito.
The selectmen presented comparisons between the two leases, highlighting areas of concern such as differences in rent paid.
“We clarified quite a few things,” Mullane said Tuesday. “I thought it went really well.”
Mullane said many people thought the issue was the liquor license, which he said is not the case. Townspeople already voted to allow the restaurant to obtain one, but the state requires a signed lease before they issue the license.
The petition question will go to referendum May 2, and will ask voters, “Shall the First Selectman be authorized to enter into a proposed lease agreement, as presented with a petition to the Town Clerk’s Office on March 28, 2011, and execute the proposed lease on behalf of the Town of North Stonington?”
Polls are open from noon to 8 p.m.
Were you at the meeting on Monday night? What did you think? How will you vote May 2?
