STYLEWATCH: One size does NOT fit all

But fashion rewards the super-slim

Vocal powerhouse Jennifer Hudson got her first big break when she placed seventh in the third season of "American Idol." Immediately after that happened, I stopped watching. I only tuned back in for the finale, when Fantasia Barrino was named the winner.

Clearly, Hudson was going to have a huge career in the music industry, but I, and certainly scores of others, felt like she had been robbed.

At the time, whenever she was critiqued on her song selection, the discussion inevitably came back to what she was wearing. I'll admit, whoever was styling J-Hud often made her look like a hot mess. It seemed like they tried to match her size to her outfit, i.e., a big girl needs an equally big outfit.

Fast forward several years and the Chicago native now has a fiance, a new baby, a new CD and a slimmed down body. About 80 pounds or so. She also is a spokesperson for Weight Watchers, the diet program that helped her in her weight loss journey.

J-Hud recently performed on an episode of "Dancing With the Stars" and she looked so different it made me do a double-take. Besides being super skinny, a drastic change from her size 16 days, she was wearing a super cute purple-plasticy dress with an extremely short hemline.

She looked amazing.

Watching her performance made me smile, but it also made me a bit sad. It made me think: Did she have to get down to a size 6 (or whatever size she is) before she could find/hire a stylist who could make her look good?

Don't big girls (plus size, big bodied, or whatever the new catchphrase is) want to look sexy and amazing too?

Not that my opinion matters, but I liked Jennifer Hudson, really liked her, when she was a big girl. Too bad the clothing industry didn't.

She'll be at MGM Grand Theater on July 10 for a stop on her "I Remember Me" Tour. Although I won't be in the audience to see for myself, hopefully she'll be wearing some truly show-stopping outfits.
