Schools: Glastonbury wins Wildcat Invite golf title

Norwich — Medalist Geoff Vartelas of Xavier of Middletown shot a one-over-par 72 Monday and Glastonbury High School won the team competition with an aggregate score of 316 at the Wildcat Invitational at Norwich Golf Course.

Norwich Free Academy was the top local school in sixth place with 353. Nick Kamireddy of NFA, Bryan Wynn and Paul Daniels of Norwich Tech and Chris Bovino of Stonington each shot scores of 83.

In the girls' nine-hole tournament, Fitch's Albrianna Farnum won title with a 45 and Waterford's Nicol Ager was the runnerup at 47. Also finishing in the top 10 were NFA's Brittany Lewitz (fourth, 49); East Lyme's Barbara Wilson (sixth, 51), East Lyme's Molly Giannattasio, NFA's Olivia Carignan and NFA's Jane Conway (tied for 7th, 56) and NFA's Sarah Marien (tied for 10th, 57).

In another match:

• Kiana Hainsworth won 3 and 2 at No. 1 in The Williams School's 4-3 loss to Chase Collegiate. Ian Myshka and Patrick Madaus also won for the Blues.

Softball

• Winning pitcher Mena Buscetto went 3-for-4 with a run scored and struck out five as St. Bernard shut out Tourtellotte, 6-0 in the ECC Small Division. Tara Kowalski had two hits, two RBI and scored a run for the Saints (9-4, 5-1). Tourtellotte is 5-10.

• Kelli Connors and Erin Miller combined for a two-hitter as Waterford beat Stonington 10-1. Connors went the first four innings, giving up one run, and Miller relieved her, tossing three innings without allowing a hit for the top-ranked Lancers (14-0). She also had two triples and two RBI. Katelyn Sykora added a triple for Waterford, with two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

• Sammy Yuknat pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and also had two hits, three runs and three RBI in Old Lyme's 11-1 win over Westbrook in the Shoreline Conference. Megan O'Neill added three this, two runs and three RBI for the Wildcats (5-6), while Kaisea Caramante had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Kaylin Riggs drove in three runs. Westbrook is 1-14.

• Kasey Commander's three-run home run wasn't enough as Old Saybrook lost to East Hampton 8-3 in the Shoreline Conference.

Boys' lacrosse

• Hyde of Woodstock scored 10 goals on 33 shots and defeated previously unbeaten St. Thomas More, 10-3. Sam Wensinger had two goals for St. Thomas More (8-1, 7-1).

• Goalie Ian Garcia had 13 saves and helped Williams roll to a 13-2 win over Watkinson. Wes Duncan led the offense with eight goals and four assists while Joab Hunt added two goals and two assists.

Girls' lacrosse

• Molly Burns scored five goals and Kori Salvietti added three as Old Saybrook blanked Capital Prep 14-0. Old Saybrook (3-9) had 35 shots on goal and six players scoring at least one goal, including Burns and Salvietti. Amelia Graham added two assists.

• Morgan of Clinton scored 10 goals in the second half and defeated Old Lyme, 13-10, in the Shoreline Conference. Katie Comerford scored five goals for the Wildcats (4-4-1, 4-2).

• Alissa Maffuid and Sammie Mielczarek each had two goals and an assist, leading Bacon Academy past Housatonic, 8-5. The Bobcats are 3-5.

Boys' track

• Ben Lakeman won two individual events (200, 400) and was on East Lyme's winning 4x100-meter relay team as the Vikings defeated Ledyard, 112-38 in the ECC Large Division.

Adam Salafia also won two events (long jump, triple jump) for East Lyme (5-2, 3-2). Steven Burger won the 800 for Ledyard (3-2, 1-2).

Volleyball

• Daryll Ferguson had 13 kills while Gage Black had 18 assists and Kevin Huang added 13 service points, leading NFA past Conard of West Hartford, 25-22, 25-12, 25-22. The Wildcats are 4-5 overall and Conard 1-11.
