A landmark on the city’s West Main Street commercial strip is a pile of rubble this week.
The former Olympic Pizza building is gone, demolished and the steep lot flattened to make way for a new CVS pharmacy with a drive-through window.
The odd-shaped building was the home of Olympic Pizza restaurant for 25 years and also at times housed a military recruiting station, the Uncas Health District office, a bank and recently the Medusa Salon hairdressing place.
Stephan Nousiopoulos, whose family founded Olympic Pizza restaurant, has the odd duel career as a restaurateur and architect. He designed the Olympic building and ran the restaurant for years before selling the business to concentrate on architectural work.
Nousiopoulos has a front seat to watch the demolition as he now is renovating the former Blockbuster store directly across the street into Fat Cat Grill & Bar. His wife, Debi Nousiopoulos runs Medusa Salon. That moved into the Blockbuster space too, next door to the new restaurant.
Medusa opened about a month ago, and Fat Cat should open in a couple weeks.
Stephan Nousiopoulos admitted he paused a moment in his renovation work to gaze across the street and got a little emotional.
“Of course we had mixed feelings,” he said. “We had a lot of memories there, but we’ve got to move on. It’s a new chapter in our lives.”
