Wednesdays on the Waterfront have begun

The opening day of the farmers’ market Wednesday morning was a success, at least for me and other early shoppers.

I got organic tomatoes, a cucumber, a huge bag of lettuce from farmers and a nice fresh loaf of multi-grain bread from Gracie Mae’s Kitchen of Griswold. I cut a couple slices of that for lunch.

A teenager handed me a free recipe book “Celebrating a Healthy Harvest” as I arrived to the market at Howard T. Brown Memorial Park. I got there a few minutes after it opened, because I wanted to make sure I got tomatoes. Turned out Brown Paper Bag Harry of Franklin had plenty of big, beautiful tomatoes. Mine are still small and green in my garden and rabbits ate my lettuce, which is growing back nicely.

Liberty Ridge Farm of Lebanon also had a table heaped high with vegetables and bright green snap peas.

Sugar Maple Farms of Lebanon had one of my favorite food items of all, real maple syrup. I didn’t need any, because my dad just got us a gallon’s worth during his recent trip to Canada. Sugar Maple Farms also has local honey. They offered free samples of each. Donna’s Delicious Designs certainly looked it. She had a table with homemade jams and jellies.

If you’re not looking for fruits and vegetables, you should check out the market anyway. Pam Day brought jewelry from her Candlelight Rose shop on Broadway, and Helen Krasun of Bozrah brought crocheted rag rugs, wool felt hats and handbags and charming garden totems made from various household items.

The downtown farmers’ market is open every Wednesday through Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Howard T. Brown Memorial Park at Norwich Harbor, a beautiful setting for any event.

Come back Wednesday evenings to Brown Park for free summer concerts on the waterfront, 6 p.m. through Aug. 10.
