The North Branford boys' track team placed well in the Shoreline Conference Championship at East Hampton on May 25, capping off a solid season.
Junior Rob Martino proved himself the fastest man in the conference when he won the 100 dash with a time of 11.19 seconds. Martino also placed fifth in the 200 (23.15) and sixth in long jump, with a leap of 19-6¾.
The 4x100 relay team of Martino, Michael Mercier, Rocco Morgan, and Corey Onofrio placed third with a time of 45.18, behind Cromwell and Valley.
With a time of 53.63, Gary Falana came in fifth in the 400 dash, while Sal Varca took third in shot put (42-5½) and seventh in javelin (142-1).
After the Shoreline meet, the Thunderbirds took their talents to Willowbrook Park in New Britain for the Class M State Championship on June 1. Scoring 10 points, North Branford placed 23rd. Pole vaulter Joe DeLucia, who placed eighth in the Shoreline with a height of 11-6, raised the bar by a foot at the state meet to clear 12-6 and take fifth in the event.
Martino placed fifth in the 100 at Class M, running it in 11.49 seconds.
The Thunderbirds bid farewell to seniors Robert Caron, Jeremy Downer, Stephen Figueroa, John Hart, R.J. Hart, Mercier, Raphael Roy, Varca, Jack White, and Ray Wilson.
