I stopped in at the Main Street Steering Committee meeting on Wednesday for a quick update on Streetscape progress.
No orders have been made, but the group is closer to forwarding decisions to the Board of Selectmen. First Selectman Philip Anthony Jr. said Wednesday that the selectmen may approve a request, if finalized, at the next regular meeting.
It looks like the first order of business for the Streetscape project could be ordering and hanging banners. Brian Kent, one of the landscape architects helping with the design phase, has said labeling the downtown is an important step, and committee members have liked the sound of "Heritage River Community." That moniker would be on the banners, and possibly part of a logo that would appear on benches and garbage receptacles.
The banners would be attached to light and utility poles along the street and over the bridge going into Jewett City. Kent said permission is needed from the owners of the poles before putting them up.
So, by the fall, there may be banners proclaiming Griswold a "Heritage River Community" as the first step in the sweeping Streetscape project.
