This is one of my favorite weekends in Norwich. Great Greek and Italian food and lots of it!
Let’s see, it’s Friday late afternoon as I write this. I’ve already been to the Grecian Food Festival at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Washington Street twice, and plan to go again for dinner. There’s enough on the menu that you don’t have to order the same thing twice. But that pastito – Greek macaroni, beef and cream sauce – is dynamite.
It’ll be the fish dinner for me tonight, and probably some spanakopeta. Those little loukoumades honey puffs make a great sweet treat.
The Grecian Food Festival continues through Sunday at 4 p.m., so I’ll have more opportunities for some take-out. Perhaps a pastito or some cookies, or some rice pudding…
Then on Saturday, I’m looking at lunch at Taste of Italy, which occupies Howard T. Brown Memorial Park from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. There’s something about a pasta and broccoli dish that sounds too inviting to pass up.
Both the Grecian Food Festival and the Taste of Italy have more than just food. There are tables of Greek cultural items and souvenirs at the Grecian Food Festival, and Father Paul Pantelis will gladly show you the sanctuary and discuss the history of the church and its faith.
Taste of Italy offers arts and crafts, live Italian music, a bocce tournament and an arts exhibit from the Slater Memorial Museum.
See you there.
