Drummond suffers mild concussion, breaks nose; Calhoun video

The injury bug has hit UConn.

Freshman Andre Drummond banged heads with walk-on Brendan Allen during practice Friday at Gampel Pavilion.

X-rays revealed that Drummond suffered a mild concussion and a broken nose. He will spend the night in the school infirmary, just as a precautionary measure.

On Monday, he will be fitted for a mask. He's expected to wear it for six to eight weeks.

The Huskies are shorthanded in the frontcourt. Sophomore center Enosch Wolf (groin pull) may miss a week. Red-shirt freshman Michael Bradley (ankle) already is out until December.

"We were down to eight guys today, so it made it a little difficult," coach Jim Calhoun said.

Also, check out the video of Calhoun talking after practice. He made some interesting comments about the Academic Progress Rate and the impact of newly adopted NCAA academic reforms.

He's not worried about the possibility of UConn being ineligible for the 2013 NCAA tournament.

"I don't have a great deal of worry for University of Connecticut basketball if we continue on the track we're on right now," Calhoun said.

Some other news and notes from Friday's practice:

-- UConn has four more practices before its first exhibition game on Wednesday.

"We've got plenty of work to do...," Calhoun said. "Hopefully, we'll get Andre back healthy and we'll see what happens."

-- Calhoun is unhappy with his offense, especially in the turnover and shooting departments. The Huskies also are lacking a leader.

"Shabazz is not playing particularly well either emotionally or otherwise at this particular point," Calhoun said.

Freshman Ryan Boatright played point guard with the first team Friday.

-- Allen, a 6-foot-3 guard from Windsor, is a new addition to the team. He played at Bridgton Academy in Maine.

"He's done a nice job for us," Calhoun said.

-- Sophomore Tyler Olander has been one of the top rebounders in recent practices.

-- More from Calhoun on the state of the Huskies:

"Defensively, we’re pretty good. I’m happy with the defense. I’m happy with the rebounding. I’m really concerned about our offense right now. We don’t have an offensive leader."
