Local roundup: UConn men's soccer advances to Big East semis

Burr places 11th at R.I. State Open

Storrs — Tony Cascio had a goal and an assist as the UConn men's soccer team scored three answered goals to beat Rutgers Sunday, 3-1, in the Big East quarterfinals.

UConn (16-2-2) will play Louisville in Friday's semifinals at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. at time to be announced. It'll be the second time the teams have played. The Huskies won in double overtime at Louisville, 1-0, on Oct. 1.

Louisville (12-5-2) beat Marquette in its semifinal, 1-0.

Andrew Jean-Baptiste and Stephane Diop scored for the Huskies.

Kene Eze scored for the Scarlet Knights (9-6-3).

Girls' cross country

• Jackie Burr placed 11th (19 minutes, 56 seconds) to earn second team All-State honors as Westerly High School placed seventh at the Rhode Island State Open at Ponaganset High School.

Molly Keating of Providence's LaSalle Academy won her third straight championship (18:24). Barrington won the team title (59 points).

Westerly scored 211 and finished just one place out of qualifying for Saturday's New England championships at the same site.

Rachel Orlando finished 26th (20:22), Carlie Sisco, was 47th (21:21) and Adeline Hanssen placed 61st (21:46) for Westerly. Also, Jessica Orr was 82nd (22:25), Sarah Garvey finished 106th (23:09) and Amber Lacey placed 114th (23:35).

Field hockey

• Martina Loncarica had a goal and an assist as second-seeded Syracuse held off No. 1 UConn, 3-2, to win the Big East championship.

Syracuse scored the game's first three goals, but the Huskies cut it to 3-2 to end the first half.

Lauren Brooks and Liz McInerney scored for Syracuse (18-3).

Anne Jeute and Rayell Heistand scored for the Huskies (17-2).

Football

• Tyler Girard-Floyd of Montville was 12-for-15 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown in St. Thomas More's 34-6 loss to Suffield Academy on Saturday.

Denzel Washington had 53 yards receiving for T-More (3-3), including an 18-yard touchdown catch, and four tackles. Khalil Whetstone added four tackles and an interception.

Women's swimming

• Junior Terri Jozsa captured first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.12) and 200 breaststroke (2:33.72), leading Coast Guard past SUNY-New Paltz 143-114 in a season opening meet Saturday. Darlene Sao won the 200 IM (2:19.83) and Heidi Gayman won the 200 freestyle (2:00.40) for the Bears. The quartet of Sao, Gayman, freshman Caitlyn Gever and sophomore Chantel Ferguson combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:47.97.

Wrestling

• Coast Guard placed sixth out of eight teams at the Messiah College Invitational in Grantham, Pa., Saturday.

Six Bears placed in the top four in their respective weight classes, including Joe Kidwell (third, 133 pounds), Colin Schuster (fourth, 157), Pat Leavitt (fourth, 184), Luke Taylor (third, 165), Gus Moreno (third, 174) and Nate Giorgio (fourth, 125). Mike Giorgio (157) and Mark Howard (heavyweight) also won matches for Coast Guard before being eliminated.

Sailing

• The Connecticut College co-ed team placed sixth out of 20 teams at this weekend's Rhode Island State Championship regatta at Newport, R.I.

Coast Guard won with 124 points. Mitchell was 18th.

Conn, ranked 13th in the Sailing World Magazine poll, scored 168. Gabe Salk, David Rex and Lindsey Press placed fourth in the B division for Conn. Bitsy Whipple, Eliza Price and Katie St. George were 10th in the A division.

The Camels also won the Hap Moore Team Racing Regatta on the Thames River this weekend.
