Above-ground power lines an inefficient idea

I fully agree with John Carney's letter about putting the power cables underground ("Put cables underground to solve power issues," Nov. 16).
CL&P claims that it would be too expensive. How about the expense of repairing the system when we have a storm? Not only does the repair cost millions, but the cost of bringing in out-of-state crews, as well as the lost revenue from customers is also very expensive.
We often have power loss from squirrels shorting out transformer tripping breakers, resulting in many hours of power loss. Power is also sometimes lost if a car or truck hits a pole and snaps it.
We had some visitors from Europe last spring, they could not believe that a country as modern and up-to-date as the United States would still have power lines above ground in a city.
