Local roundup: Coast Guard women suffer first loss

St. Thomas More stays unbeaten

Norton, Mass. - Jeana Trimboli scored eight of her team-high 11 points in the second half as Wheaton College defeated previously unbeaten Coast Guard Academy, 58-43 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night.

Coast Guard (4-1) came in as the NEWMAC's top-scoring team (74.2 points per game), but was held to just 31.3 percent shooting and scored a season-low in points.

Dani Knox led the Bears with 11 points off the bench, while Kaitlin Ward had 10 points and four steals. Brittney Zimmerman had seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

It was the sixth win in a row over Coast Guard for the Lyons (2-3).

In other news:

• Stephanie Slonski was misidenitfied in a roundup item in Wednesday's edition. The former Griswold High standout had 18 points, 12 assists and seven reboounds, leading Western Connecticut to a 83-69 victory over Conn College on Tuesday night.

Men's basketball

• A.J. English scored a game-high 19 points and Ky Howard added 13 as St. Thomas More stayed unbeaten with a 66-55 win over New Hampton. New London's Torin Childs-Harris had five points and eight rebounds for the Chancellors (4-0). New Hampton is 3-1.

Baseball

• Montville senior Tre Gonzalez has accpeted a scholarship to play at Southern New Hampshire University next fall. Gonzalez is 11-2 with a 2.18 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings for the Indians, including a 1-0 win in the Class M title game last spring, the second of back-to-back championships for the school.

Southern New Hampshire is a Division II school and a member of the Northeast 10 Conference, which also includes the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State.

Public speaking

• Jack Renkens of Recruiting Realities will speak at the East Lyme High School auditorium today at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Renkens will speak about responsibility, empowerment and the importance of academics in finding the right college match for each prospective student-athlete.

Youth basketball

• Registration is ongoing for the Ledyard Youth Basketball League. Boys and girls ages 8-14 as of Dec. 31, 2011 are eligible.For more information, please contact the Ledyard Parks and Recreation Office at (860) 464-9112.

Clarification

• Old Lyme senior Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn has not been accepeted to Amherst College. Fairfield-Sonn, a quarterback/safety for the Valley Regional/Old Lyme co-op football team, applied early, but will not learn of the school's decision until Dec. 15.
