Ronnie and Sandy (Zito) Nixon of Waterford celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a surprise party on Oct. 29, 2011, given by their family at the Groton Motor Inn.

They were married on Oct. 14, 1961, at St. Mary's Church in New London. They have two children, Karen and Ed Tanguay and David and Vikki Nixon and five grandchildren, Ryan, Robyn, Jacob Nixon and Tyler and Joshua Tanguay.

Ron was a pipefitter supervisor at Electric Boat, retiring after 18 years. Sandy is employed as an adminstrative assistant at Baroco Corp. in Gales Ferry. She formerly worked with her family at Suburban Plumbing and Heating Contractors in New London.

They celebrated their anniversary by traveling for 23 days on a bus tour of Italy and a cruise visiting the Holy Land. The highlight was riding in a gondola and visiting the pyramids of Egypt. They love cruising; this is their 29th excursion!

The couple want to thank all their family and friends for making their party such a very happy one. Special thanks to Karen, Ed, Jim, and Jen.
