Hartford - Waterford High School scored the game's final four points to edge Bloomfield, 69-66, in the Doc Hurley Classic boys' basketball tournament at Weaver High School on Saturday.
Trailing 66-65, Cory Murallo hit a jumper with 40 seconds left to push the Lancers (2-0) in front 67-66, and after stopping the Warhawks (0-2) on defense, Geary McLeod hit two clutch free throws with eight seconds left to provide the margin of victory.
"This was really good for our kids," Waterford coach Greg Gwudz said. "We had a big lead, but then we got in foul trouble, Bloomfield was able to hurt us with pressure and got back into the game.
"But it was good that it went down to the wire with a lot of pressure because I was curious to see how our kids would respond ... and they responded well. (Bloomfield) is a very good team and this will prepare us for our league schedule."
McLeod finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and for steals while Ron Baude added 17 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Martin had 16 points (four 3-pointers), Murallo finished with 13 points and Nolan Long had 11 rebounds in four blocked shots.
