New London - It had been a long New Year's morning for Jacob Bradow, so it wasn't surprising he was taking a nap at 9:30 a.m. After all, he'd just been born about eight hours previously, at 1:01 a.m. at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

Jacob, the son of Jennifer and Jim Bradow of Colchester, is the always-anticipated (if unofficial) "First Baby of the Region." He came into the world a few hours ahead of another baby at L&M, and spokespersons at both William Backus Hospital in Norwich and The Westerly Hospital reported early Sunday that, while there were expectant mothers on site in both those facilities, no deliveries were impending.

"At first, we didn't really think about him being a New Year's baby," Jennifer said. She was seated in a chair by her bed in their room in the hospital's labor & delivery department, with Jacob dozing in her arms and Jim standing by wearing a grin and a baseball cap. "We didn't want a Christmas baby, but it wasn't until later we thought about New Year's. His due date was Jan. 2."

Jennifer probably needed a nap as much as her son. While Jim had snatched a few bits of sleep, Mom had been awake and on duty since they'd had arrived at the hospital around 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

"It was a long labor," Jim said, looking at his wife admiringly.

There was no shortage of L&M competition for Jacob's First Baby honors. Labor and delivery nurse Martha Garvin, on duty Sunday morning, said, "We had 10 deliveries on the 30th, five on New Year's Eve, and five on the 29th. That's crazy. It was like everyone wanted to be here before the new year."

Jacob, who is the Bradow's first child, weighs six pounds, three ounces and is 21 inches long.
