A committee is organizing this year’s celebration of the town’s 325th anniversary.
It won’t be as big as the 300th event 25 years ago, but it’s a good time to have some fun with town history and some of its best features. This month, check out the display on scouting history in town at the Preston Public Library. There will be different displays each month in the library meeting room.
And if you feel up to it, join the scouts on a planned 35-mile, two-day hike from Preston to Ashford in August. They are re-enacting a hike in 1963 to bring the ashes from the last fire at a former Boy Scout camp on River Road to a new camp established in Ashford.
Not that ambitious? Then take in a lecture this spring or one of the planned concerts or go on a farm tour in August.
Events coordinator Tracy Rosiene, Preston Historical Society President Linda Christensen and town Parks and Recreation Director Gail Rigney are working hard to fill the calendar with interesting events. They also are looking for volunteers and sponsors for some events that might cost a little money.
To volunteer or to sponsor an event, call the Parks and Recreation office at (860) 887-5581, ext. 4. A story describing some of the events planned so far will be in Thursday’s Thames River Times.
