Norwich — The city received approval Tuesday of a $200,000 state historic preservation grant to restore the iron railings at the front and side steps at City Hall, Mayor Peter Nystrom announced.

The grant must be matched equally with city funds, which already have been allocated in this year’s capital improvements budget, Public Works Director Barry Ellison said.

Ellison said many of the railing ballasts have rusted and must be replaced. A center railing that ran down the wide front steps also will be replaced. The city allocated $210,000 in the budget for the works in hopes of obtaining the grant.

Work will be coordinated to avoid major celebrations at City Hall this year, including the planned installation of an Emancipation Proclamation bell and tower adjacent to the City Hall plaza, Ellison said.
