UConn’s Andre Drummond is strengthening his position as the front-runner for Big East rookie of the year honors.
He won his fourth conference rookie of the week award on Monday after averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds in wins over West Virginia and Notre Dame.
Some other UConn news:
-- The Huskies moved from No. 17 to No. 13 in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll. Syracuse (19-0) remains in the top spot. No. 10 Georgetown, No. 21 Marquette and No. 23 Louisville are the other teams in the poll.
UConn (14-3, 4-2) is preparing to host Cincinnati (14-4, 4-1), which resides in second place in the Big East. Cincinnati senior guard Dion Dixon was named the Big East player of the week. Dixon led the Bearcats to wins over Georgetown and Villanova, scoring 22 points in each win.
-- UConn-bound Omar Calhoun made the New York Post’s top performers list for the week of Jan. 9.
Calhoun, a 6-foot-3 guard, scored 34 points and added 11 rebounds in Christ the King’s 79-76 win over Miller Grove (Ga.) Saturday and also chipped in 24 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Sylvan Hill (Ark.).
-- In recruiting news, UConn has offered a scholarship to Christopher Obekpa, a 6-9 senior forward-center out of Our Savior New American. Coach Jim Calhoun watched Obekpa play Sunday at the 2012 Hoophall Classic in Springfield, according to a report on MassLive.com.
