J.W. "Bill" Sheehan of Waterford has been chosen as this year's recipient of the Francis "Sam" Crowley Public Service Award.
The award, given by the Ledge Light Health District, is named after the district's former director of health. Sheehan has been a member of the Community Emergency Response Team for more than five years, and is also a member of the American Red Cross and the Ledge Light Medical Reserve Corps.
This group of medical and non-medical volunteers assists with emergency response after disease outbreaks or disasters and at non-emergency drills and flu vaccination clinics.
A retired naval officer and former executive officer of the Naval Submarine Base, he served as the site coordinator of the 2004 TOPOFF 3 terrorist drill in New London. He is chairman of the Connecticut Nuclear Energy Advisory Council and the Connecticut Region 4 Training and Exercise Committee.
